LIVESTREAM: RJS’ thorough analysis on City Council redistricting

SEATTLE— Four organizers from within the Redistricting Justice for Seattle (RJS) Coalition will analyze Seattle’s 2022 redistricting results, process, and what it means for the future of Seattle City Council.

The Redistricting Commission finalized their map on Nov. 8 after a slew of proposals. Now, the RJS Coalition reflects on its high impact and the Commission’s work. Join RJS organizers Katie Stultz, Nirae Petty, and Andrew Hong—all of whom have expertise in Seattle politics, community organizing, and in voter analysis—to dive into these news maps. They will go over population changes, the first-ever community redistricting input process, electoral and legislative impacts, and break down how the Commission landed on this map.

Who: Katie Stultz from Win | Win, Kamau Chege from the Washington Community Alliance, Nirae Petty from the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, and Andrew Hong from RJS
What: RJS’ City Council Final Redistricting Analysis
When: Friday, Nov. 18 at 1-2PM

The final map plan accomplishes many of the goals of the RJS Coalition’s—a coalition of organizations who advocate for fair redistricting lines for people of color, renters, and low-income people. Some of this year’s redistricting feats included undoing the division of Yesler Terrace and Chinatown-International District, keeping South Seattle whole within one district, and protecting renters and students in the University District.

An impressive 93% of the final map mirrors the proposal RJS submitted in July, showing RJS’ incredible influence on the process from the start to end. The RJS Coalition met one-on-one with the majority of the Commissioners, organized testimony at nearly every public meeting, and was quoted in dozens of articles in The Seattle Times, PubliCola, The Stranger, The Urbanist, and more about local redistricting.
